Tottenham 1 Swansea City 0
Premier League 16th December 2012
So much for the predicted free flowing goal fest between two attacking sides. It was more or less one way traffic and Spurs ended the game with almost 70% of the territorial advantage.
Even with 29 attempted shots to Swansea’s three, it looked like it could have been one of those frustrating games where we fail to break down a team at the Lane only to concede a late winner. We’ve seen that many a time in recent years, but fortunately this time Super Jan stepped up to give us the three points.
The goal came as a Walker free-kick was flicked on towards the back post by an attempted Michu clearance, the ball came to Vertonghen who showed good reactions to smack the ball first time into the far corner. 1-0 Spurs.
Cue a nervy finish as Spurs sat back and Swansea begun to pump long balls into the area filled with panicky Spurs defenders. A few dodgy moments of ignored calls, indecisiveness and hoofed clearances. Lloris raced off his line excellently to intercept a long ball over the top that could have seen Swansea equalise. In punching out, his elbow collided with the head of Michu. Not a penalty, but Spurs went flying up the pitch with Townsend unaware of what was going on behind him. The ref should have stopped the match, but didn’t and it could have all kicked off if Townsend had ended up scoring his one on one. Even more so if Swansea had equalised in the additional stoppage time with the score still at 1-0. Fortunately for the ref, his indecisiveness didn’t have any further consequences both in terms of there being a delay to Michu’s treatment (he was OK, but you can’t be too sure with head injuries), and with Spurs holding on to win.

Brad Friedel – Level third. Very good to see! Lets keep it going!!!
Aaron Lennon – Good win today against a good Swansea side back in the top 4!!! #coys
Andros Townsend – Thanks for all your msgs! Pleased to have got some gametime today, its been a while and more importantly buzzin we got the win! #COYS
Mousa Dembélé – Meal with the team l’atelier london
Lloris 7 – Wasn’t exactly tested by Swansea, but his command of the area and decisiveness was excellent throughout. How nice it is to have a keeper to make the right call as to when to come off his line, be willing to do it, (unlike Friedel) and not completely cock it up and give away a penalty (like Gomes).
Walker 6.5 – Still looks like he’s lacking in confidence and is unwilling to take people on in attack. A few strange and indecisive moments in defence. Had one great long distance shot that almost out foxed the keeper.
Gallas 7 – Some great interceptions and stole the ball off of dawdling Swansea players numerous times in the first half. Was done for pace a few times though.
Vertonghen 8 – Obviously one of our long term first choice centre backs. Strong at the back and his quick reactions for the goal were striker-esq.
Naughton 6 – You’ve got to remember that Naughton is not a left back, and it’s going to be hard for him to show his true potential playing on the wrong side. Unfortunately his crossing was poor and was just playing safe balls throughout.
Lennon 6.5 – Some good runs, a few shots and got himself into a few good crossing positions. His final ball however was crap.
Sandro 7 – Some fantastic crunching tackles at key times.
Dembele 7 – Always able to receive the ball and offload it again without giving it away under pressure. A couple of indecisive moments and wayward passes that could have led to goals had Swansea been more clinical. Did start giving the ball away a bit once he got injured. Not that you can really blame him for that.
Dempsey 6 – Got into some good positions but seemed unwilling to shoot much.
Adebayor 6.5 – Some good hold up play to bring people into an attack, but spent much of his time crossing from the left, which was strange.
Defoe 6.5 – Lively. Had two or three really good chances. Either he was not on form, or the Swansea keeper was bang on it.
Sigurdsson 6 – Looked somewhat of an attacking threat.
Townsend 6.5 – A good cameo, won us the free kick that led to the goal.
Parker 5 – On late. Good to see him back on the pitch. Had one touch, a typical no nonsense Parker moment as he took charge of some last minute faff in the penalty area to blast a clearance downfield.
